Dr. Walter Maiwald took his German patent bar examination in 1985 and his European patent attorney’s examination in 1987. He is a registered European Trademark and Design Attorney. Walter Maiwald founded his own law firm in 1993. Until 2010 he was managing director of Maiwald Patentanwalts GmbH in Germany and was of counsel there until 2016. Since 2005, Dr. Maiwald has been a managing director of Maiwald Patentanwaltsges. (Schweiz) mbH., which is now Gottschalk Maiwald Patentanwalts- und Rechtsanwalts- (Schweiz) GmbH in Zurich.

Dr. Maiwald’s main practice areas include German and international intellectual property law, including patent and trademark prosecution and infringement, litigation, licensing and related consulting services.

He has organized and conducted national and international litigation for major clients, in fields ranging from pharmaceuticals to sensor and signal processing technologies. He has successfully represented clients in more than 150 litigation cases and more than 350 opposition procedures, at all court levels in Germany and up to the European Patent Office’s Enlarged Board of Appeal.

For many years, Walter Maiwald served as a member of the Editorial Board of “Mitteilungen der deutschen Patentanwälte”, the official journal of the German Patent Attorney’s Chamber, and as a member of the Editorial Board of INTA’s TRADEMARK REPORTER. He is a member of GRUR, AIPPI, FICPI and INTA.

He was ranked by his peers among the world’s leading patent law experts in the 1997, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2014 issues and as a leading trademark law practitioner in the 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2015 issues of MIP’s Expert Guides. In the first edition (2014) of Managing Intellectual Property’s new “IP Stars Handbook Patents”, Walter Maiwald was named, among others, as a German IP Star.
