examination in 1985 and his European patent attorney\u2019s examination in 1987. He is a registered European Trademark and Design Attorney. Walter Maiwald founded his own law firm in 1993. Until 2010 he was managing director of Maiwald Patentanwalts GmbH in Germany and was of counsel there until 2016. Since 2005, Dr. Maiwald has been a managing director of Maiwald Patentanwaltsges. (Schweiz) mbH., which is now Gottschalk Maiwald Patentanwalts- und Rechtsanwalts- (Schweiz) GmbH in Zurich.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Maiwald\u2019s main practice areas include German and international intellectual property law, including patent and trademark prosecution and infringement, litigation, licensing and related consulting services.<\/p>\n<p>He has organized and conducted national and international litigation for major clients, in fields ranging from pharmaceuticals to sensor and signal processing technologies. He has successfully represented clients in more than 150 litigation cases and more than 350 opposition procedures, at all court levels in Germany and up to the European Patent Office\u2019s Enlarged Board of Appeal.<\/p>\n<p>For many years, Walter Maiwald served as a member of the Editorial Board of \u201cMitteilungen der deutschen Patentanw\u00e4lte\u201d, the official journal of the German Patent Attorney\u2019s Chamber, and as a member of the Editorial Board of INTA\u2019s TRADEMARK REPORTER. He is a member of GRUR, AIPPI, FICPI and INTA.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Maiwald has been a speaker at a number of national and international conventions and conferences, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Seventh EuroForum Conference on International Patent Litigation (London, June 1997)<\/li>\n<li>ECPI Conference on Trends in Global Pharmaceutical Patent Strategy (London, November 1997)<\/li>\n<li>Eighth EuroForum Conference on International Patent Litigation (London, April 1998)<\/li>\n<li>Conference on Pharmaceutical Patent Strategies in the USA &amp; Europe (London, April 1998)<\/li>\n<li>Ninth EuroForum Conference on International Patent Litigation (London, February 1999)<\/li>\n<li>EuroLegal\u2019s Conference on Pharmaceutical Patent Life Cycles (London, July 2004)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>He was ranked by his peers among the world\u2019s leading patent law experts in the 1997, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2014 issues and as a leading trademark law practitioner in the 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2015 issues of MIP\u2019s Expert Guides. In the first edition (2014) of Managing Intellectual Property\u2019s new \u201cIP Stars Handbook Patents\u201d, Walter Maiwald was named, among others, as a German IP
